:: How it all began ::
My husband said, “We don’t want a dog!” ...He never really had a chance!
::The short story on our pet family... ::
We started dog sitting for Jackie years before we actually became her family. I was only allowed the occasional temporary dog in the house as long as they had a “real” home to go back to. Jackie had a wonderful, loving home with a “Mom” that she adored! Unfortunately Margie became ill and eventually passed away. Jackie became ours as one of Margie’s last wishes. Rob, and many others, couldn’t say “No” to Margie!
I answered an ad on Craigslist for a give away Dachshund with the intentions of finding her a home. She wasn’t my ideal type of Dachshund, I had wanted a long-haired dapple or long-haired red. So I figured I’d have no problem giving her up. I truly did try for a few months to find her a home but in the end she stayed. She was 3 years old and didn’t even have a name. So after trying some out on her we tried “Amber” and it was the only one that she responded to right away.
Checkers the cat was born to a feral mother that lived near a homeless shelter in Charlotte, NC. My friends sister was trying to find homes for 3 kittens. She told me about 2 that had been caught, they sounded cute but when she said there was a black and white one I knew it was meant to be. I just had to work on the husband! When I asked him casually one Sunday after church he said “Yes” right away! We had a mouse problem outside and we thought he’d be a good mouser. Well, when our older indoor cat passed away I didn’t have the heart to put him outside, so now he lives a pampered life. Our mouse problem outside has gone away too strangely enough.
Grandog was another free dog on Craigslist. She was listed as 10-12 year old Dachshund needing a new home ASAP! That really caught my attention so I answered the ad and found out she was found roaming by a college student. She had tags and her owners didn’t want her anymore and the student couldn’t keep her. So off I went with my daughter on a 3 1/2 journey to pick her up. I did actually find her a home in Iowa and my son and I drove her up to Illinois so she could be picked up by her new owner. On her last night with us she put her doggy halo on perfectly straight and convinced me she already had a home.....so back she came with us on a 13 hour journey to the place she had started out in the first place. The lady she WAS going to live with did find another senior Dachshund a few weeks later.
Casper was living outside for years with another Dachshund that was also listed on Craigslist for free. I actually went to just pick up the female. But when I got there they also said they’d give me Casper too. Well, look at that face, how could I resist. Casper will be going to live with my daughter when she gets married in March, 2010. He was heartworm positive but just ended his treatment.. So.... Casper is my “Grandog”, not to be confused with “Grandog, the Queen-Mum” above.
